Conventional Contact Lenses (Vial)
Contacts for a Long-Term Replacement Schedule
Vial contact lenses are packaged in vials (hence the name “vial contact lenses”). These contacts
are designed to be worn daily for anywhere from 3 months to a year before being replaced. For this
reason, only those individuals who are quite diligent about cleaning and taking care of their lenses
should consider these contacts as an option. One of the benefits of vial contact lenses, however, is
that they are available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and curvatures, which makes them ideal for
people who have hard-to-fit
corneas. Vial lenses, although more expensive
to buy,
last longer than disposable contact lenses and end up being cheaper
in the long run.

An important point to note is that vial lenses are traditionally made up of a relatively old-fashioned
contact lens material which is notoriously low in oxygen permeability. What this basically
means is that for people who wear these lenses, there is a much lower amount of oxygen reaching the eye,
which can set the person up for numerous different problems, the worst of which being infection due to
a compromised cornea. Regular checkups with your eye care professional will ensure that your lenses are
clean and your eyes are healthy.
