powers in two different meridians. If your prescription looks something like this: -2.00/-1.00x180,
then you have astigmatism. The second part (-1.00x180) is called the cylinder power and axis, and
determines the amount of astigmatism a person has.

on the eye, it has a tendency to rotate. For spherical contact lenses, this doesn't matter, but for
toric contact lenses, this makes a big difference. When an eye doctor fits a patient with toric contacts
he or she will first use a trial pair and then determine from that how much the contact lens rotates. The
doctor will then adjust the cylinder axis (180 in the above example) to account for the rotation of the
contact lens on the eye. As such, a person cannot expect to have ideal vision when using the spectacle
prescription to order toric contact lenses.
