Bifocal Contact Lenses

Contact Lenses for People over Age 40

For anyone over the age of 40, the reality of the need for bifocals is impending. However, not everyone is ready to share it with the world! Bifocal contact lenses offer visual freedom, at both distance and near, without line bifocals and without bulky glasses. Through the years, bifocal contact lenses have even developed to the point where they are available as daily contact lenses, giving you the even greater freedom of being picky about the bifocal contact lenses that you choose. Bifocal contacts are available as both soft contacts and rigid gas permeable contacts.

Bifocal Contact Lens Designs

There are a few different designs of bifocal contact lenses. The two basic concepts can be categorized into (1) simultaneous vision, and (2) alternating vision. The simultaneous vision design is by far the most popular and the most comfortable. The lenses have an aspheric design similar to that in no-line bifocals (aka. progressives, or PALs). The key feature with simultaneous vision contacts is their dependence of pupil size. The amount of light that the pupil allows into the eye will determine the power of the lens. Anyone who has small pupils that don't respond adequately to changes in distance and to changes in light levels will not be successful in simultaneous vision bifocal contacts.

The alternating design works similarly to line bifocals in that there is a specific portion of the contact lens designated for distance lens power, and a separate part of the lens that contains the power needed for a person to see clearly at near. In order to provide good vision, these lenses should not rotate on the eye, so they must be either truncated or thick on the bottom (prism-ballasted), or both. This makes the lenses slightly less comfortable.
