Pinguecula

Overview

If you live in a dry, windy, hot environment chances are, you will develop pinguecula in your old age. There is no need to be concerned, however. These fleshy growths can develop on either side of your iris (usually the nasal side) and are actually a non-malignant growth of the transparent mucous membrane (the conjunctiva) that lines the white part of the eye (the sclera).

Pinguecula are very similar to pterygia in appearance. However, unlike a pterygium, pinguecula are far less likely to grow across the cornea and impair vision.

Signs & Symptoms of Pinguecula

Many people may not even realize that they have pinguecula until they visit their eye doctor. It is a very slow-growing condition and in it's early stages, you would need a microscope to actually see it – this is of course how the optometrist is able to view it. In some people, the pinguecula can enlarge and become noticeable. Generally, however, there are no symptoms associated.

Pinguecula Treatment

There is no treatment required for pinguecula. It is a benign condition that is slow growing and has no impact on vision. Should the eye feel irritated, artificial tears are an excellent option for relief.

Prevention of Pinguecula

Development of pinguecula is strongly associated with dry, arid, and hot environments. In these harsh conditions, the eyes are continually subjected to irritants. If you cannot avoid such conditions, try toting around a bottle of artificial tears with you. Apply the eye drops about 4 times a day, or as needed.
