Entropion
Overview
Entropion is the inward turning of the lower eyelid (occasionally the upper eyelid can be affected
instead/also). It can be a painful eye condition which causes the eyelashes to scrape against the front
surface of the eye with each blink. Entropion is most often a result of aging
(involutional entropion), but can also be
caused by infection (acute spastic entropion) or scarring inside the eyelid
(cicatricial entropion). Chronic
irritation of the front surface of the eye
(cornea) can lead to scarring, which leads to
vision loss, so treatment is often necessary - the sooner the better.
Signs & Symptoms of Entropion
Symptoms of entropion are mostly related to the burning irritation and grittiness felt by those who
have it. The eye (or eyes) often appear red from the irritation. Excess tearing
(epiphora) may also occur. If the
cornea is damaged, vision loss may occur
as well.
Detection & Diagnosis of Entropion
Entropion can be detected and diagnosed during a
routine eye examination, in which a
slit lamp microscope is used to examine the
surface of the eye under high power.
Entropion Treatment
In most cases of entropion, eyelid surgery is necessary. The surgical procedure used to treat
entropion depends on the type of entropion. Temporary relief can be achieved by pulling the lower lid
down and taping it with a piece of tape.
Artificial tears can also be used for
relief from the irritation of eyelashes rubbing against the eye.
