20/20 vision
20/20 is a commonly used term used to describe perfect vision
(emmetropia). The “20” in the
numerator (top) describes the distance between the eye and the
eye chart (measure in feet) and the
“20” in the denominator (bottom) describes the distance at which a person with normal vision can
read the 20/20 line on the eye chart (measure in feet). For example, a person with 20/20 vision
will be able to read the 20/100 line of the eye chart from a distance of 100 feet. Many young
people can actually see the 20/15 line, which indicates vision that is better than 20/20. In
countries such as Canada and the UK, the metric system is used, so 6/6 (measured in meters) is
used to describe perfect vision rather than 20/20.
