Eye Drops
Artificial Tears
For dry eye sufferers, the relief from artificial tears is phenomenal - while it lasts. But also
frustratingly short lived. Within just a few short minutes, your eyes return to their original,
painful condition. Making artificial tears last longer is the #1 concern for researchers of
dry eye syndrome, so you can rest easy because the
future is looking bright (and comfortable)! Below you will find some information about the more
recent innovations developed by researchers to prolong the “residence time” of eye drops following
application onto the eye's surface.
Systane by Alcon
|
Systane is a truly unique formulation that contains hydroxypropyl (HP) guar. Activated by
the normal slightly alkaline pH of the eye's surface, HP guar attaches itself to areas of the
corneal epithelium that have been
disrupted or damaged and are causing extreme discomfort. HP guar effectively takes the place
of the glycocalyx structure of the mucin layer of the tear film, acting as a temporary
“bandage” which enables the actual tear film to begin the healing process.

Soothe Emollient Eye Drops by Alimera
One of the more recent developments by Alimera Sciences is Soothe Emollient Eye Drops. These eye
drops are composed of an aqueous-lipid solution that closely resembles both the aqueous and lipid
layers of the tear film. The lipid portion of the eye drops is made up of a proprietary mineral
combination called Restoryl. When applied to the surface of the eye, Restoryl is designed to hold in
moisture by preventing evaporation. According to Alimera Sciences, the beneficial effects of Soothe
eye drops will last up to 8 hours.
Refresh Endura Lubricant Eye Drops by Allergan
|
Refresh Endura is also an emulsion formulation that combines both lipid and aqueous
components. Rather than Restoryl, Refresh Endura incorporates castor oil as its active
ingredient for prolonging comfort after application of the eye drops.
|
GenTeal Artificial Tears by Novartis
|
GenTeal eye drops contain the active ingredient hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, which
serves the same purpose as Restoryl in Soothe Eye Drops and castor oil in Refresh Endura.

Theratears by Advanced Vision Research
|
Theratears is a hypotonic solution that is designed to both increase the volume of the
tear film and reduce its osmolarity. Theratears tackles the issue that in some cases of
dry eye syndrome, it is believed that increased tear osmolarity can actually cause damage
to the ocular surface, particularly the
goblet cells that are essential
to the production of a healthy tear film.

Which Eye Drop Formulation Lasts the Longest?
With the enormous variety of artificial tears available, this is probably the first question the
comes to mind. Unfortunately, there is no straight answer to this question. In short, it depends.
When it comes to living, breathing human beings, we are all different, and as such, what works for one
person does not necessarily work for another person. It's the unfortunate reality of life. Luckily,
many optometrists do offer sample bottles in their offices, so if you get a chance, ask for his/her
recommended product and perhaps you can try a few different ones.
How Do I Choose Which Eye Drops Are Best?
As a former employee of an optometric clinic, I can tell you, that it really is valuable to try a
few different kinds of eye drops. They truly are quite different from each other. In my case, Systane
was definitely my favorite. My mom, however, was definitely not a fan. The reason for her dislike?
She doesn't like the gels. For her, the lower the viscosity, the better. So like I said, you have
to shop around. What works for one person may not work for another person. Either it doesn't work,
or you simply don't like it for one reason or another. Anyone with allergies may find that the
multi-dose bottles are not acceptable because they contain preservatives (which cause an allergic
reaction in many people). Fortunately, most artificial tears manufacturers are moving away from
preservatives, and towards single-dose applications. On the other hand, people who suffer arthritic
hands may not be able to manipulate the tiny single-drop plastic vials of the single-dose
formulations.
